The 1996-1997 Coppin State Eagles went 15-3 winning the MEAC regular season championship. To get to the NCAA Tournament they'd have to also win the MEAC conference tournament. And Fang Mitchell's squad did just that in very dramatic fashion. First was an OT, 90-88, win over Maryland-Eastern Shore and then another OT win 3 nights later in the MEAC Championship game beating North Carolina A&T, 81-74.

After losing Keith Van Horn to the NBA Draft Rick Majerus' Utah Utes started the '97-98 season ranked #16 in the preseason poll. They quickly rose up the rankings after starting the season on an 18 game win streak and finishing the season 25-3. As the #3 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament the Utes advanced to the Sweet 16 after wins against #14 seed San Francisco and #6 seed Arkansas.

Bill Frieder's tenure at Arizona State ended after the '96-97 season in which the Sun Devils went 10-20 including 2-16 in the Pac 12. It is notable in that it was the beginning of one of ASU's greatest players, Eddie House. House earned All Pac 12 Freshman team honors that year after averaging 13 points per game. He would go on to have a great career as a Sun Devil capturing the Pac 12 Player of the Year award in 2000 before enjoying an 11 year career in the NBA.

The Runnin' Horns entered the '96-97 season ranked 16th in the AP Poll. Led by senior guard Reggie Freeman's averages of 22 points and 8 rebounds a game the Longhorns finished the regular season 16-11 and squarely on the bubble heading into Selection Sunday. After squeaking into the NCAA Tournament as the #10 seed in the East Region, Texas knocked off #7 Wisconsin, 71-58, and #15 seed Coppin State, 82-81, to earn a trip to the Sweet 16.
